"He can really skate, he's one of our top penalty killers. I think the system we’re trying to play fits in with his type of play as far as going in, trying to create turnovers; when he didn’t play when he was banged up, I missed him on the bench. Not sure what his goal production is, not sure if its top six, but he’s a guy you could put up there. It’s not always about scoring goals in the top six position; it’s about creating chances for some other people. You can bounce him around, I've used him a lot after we scored goals, I’ve used him at the end of games."This are the direct work from Coach Torts mouth this past week. But who is Fredrick Sjostrom. Who is this unsung hero.
Sjostrom has been a skilled penalty killer that was used on 4th line duty under the Renney Era. He has shown flashes of speed and skill, but when your stuck playing with Blair Betts and Colton Orr your offensive numbers will suffer.
But since Coach Torts has signed on and took over as Commander of the Rangers, Sjoey has seen his role increase. No longer is he expected to just kill penalties.
Tonight, vs Buffalo, with the Rangers needing to hold onto a once 3 goal lead, Sjoey made an amazing play to spring Ryan Callahan for the empty net goal to seal the deal.
Torts knows something we don't see yet - but Sjoey before long may just become one of those type of players the Garden Embraces.
Few other quick notes from tonights game :
- How good is Marc Staal? I mean seriously folks, this kid had better go buy a nice trophy case for the Norris Trophies he is going to win in the future.
- Sean Avery Effect - Embrace it and Believe it - Funny, how you don't hear about what type of scumbag Avery is now from those fair weather sheep fans.
- Brandon Dubinskys name will only show up on the Stat Sheet for an assist -but he played a very good game. Sometimes the stats that don't how up on a sheet are more important then the ones that do.
- Chris Drury is playing better - and while I'm still heart broken over his play - at least he looks to be coming out of his coma.
- Paul Mara Beard Night MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!
