Now - the waiting begins....

With 4 days off, the next time the New York Rangers step on the ice, you may see a few new names and numbers.

Then again, based on prior history, that may be an outlandish statement. Glen " Let me blame everyone but the guy who signs the contracts" Sather, has shown to be rather incompetent when it comes to deadline day deals. Lets look at some of the past "achievements" made by Mr. 5 rings.

  • 2008 - Rangers acquire Christian Backman for a 4th rd pick - Now, grant it, trading away a pick under this regime is probably a good thing based on track record. However, the Rangers were ready and posed to make a big push towards the cup. Their one downfall was the defense. Knowing this, and supposedly having "depth" now in our system, Sather falled to acquire a game changing blueliner. Backman quickly made a push to replace Malik as the crowds boo bird target.
  • 2007 - Rangers after a memorable 2006 season, looking to win their first playoff game and series in 10 yrs, trade Aaron Ward for Paul Mara. While this trade has paid off recently, as Mara has established himself a solid blueliner, it did little at the time to address the needs at the time. Earlier in the beginning of February Sather did pull of a nice deal for Sean Avery while only giving up 2 prospects who would never lace up skates on pro-ice.
  • 2006 - Sandis Ozolinsh for a pick. Here is imcomptance at its best. For the first time in 9 years, the Rangers were poised to make the playoffs. In what was a memorable season, the Rangers needed blueline depth ( see a recurring pattern yet). So what does Mr. Sather do...he acquires a blueliner who didnt know how to play defense. He acquired a recovering alcoholic, who was no longer on an NHL roster. The best part of this deal was when Ozolinsh put a puck in his own net during the playoffs... CLASSIC!
  • 2004 - The Purge - so many deals... Leetch, Holik, DeVries, Malakov, Markannen amongst others - you would figure that it would help restore the farm system... you would figure wrong. As the only players 5 yrs later from the pre-lockout purge is Blair Betts ( 4th liner ) and Steven Valliquette ( Backup)

Kudos to you Mr Sather!!! Wed, March 4th should bring about another one of your wonderful dealings that will surely lead to John Torterella being dismissed in the future.
